Prospect, July issue—Syria, the EU, Clive James on Dan Brown, Nigel Farage, and Paul Tucker’s last word on the Bank of England

The July issue of Prospect is out this Thursday—the cover story is a report from Syria by James Harkin, written as Britain and the US mull sending arms to the Syrian opposition forces. “The situation is becoming increasingly bleak for the rebels,” he says, adding that foreign powers “would be better advised to step up humanitarian aid to the millions of displaced Syrians who urgently need it.”

Bronwen Maddox, editor of Prospect, uses this month’s editorial to call for an audit of Britain’s relationship with the EU. Is that relationship a cost or a net gain for Britain? The government must “give us the real numbers—and start work on them now,” says the editor.

Richard Lambert, former editor of the FT and member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, makes a passionate case for Britain remaining in the EU and Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip, also writes in this July issue, but not on the subject you might think.

The middle class predicament also comes under the microscope—the assumption that a person can work hard, save a bit and retire comfortably now no longer holds, writes Andy Davis. What is more, the politicians have the middle classes in their sights and look like they have squeezing in mind. Peter Kellner, president of YouGov, shares the results of new polls on social mobility in Britain.

Paul Tucker also writes in this issue, in his final piece before standing down as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England—central bankers should beware the influence of politicians, he says.

Also: Terry Eagleton explains why he’s never used email; Clive James dissects the latest book by Dan Brown; Andrew Adonis imagines away the First World War; and David Owen, Christine Ockrent, Adam Gopnik and Jonathan Coe also contribute.

The July issue of Prospect is out in shops this Thursday.
