About us

Prospect has established itself as a must-read title with key figures in government, journalism, policy making and business. People turn to Prospect for the ideas and trends behind the headlines and for a contrarian view of topics.

Prospect is Britain’s leading monthly current affairs magazine. It is an independent and eclectic forum for writing and thinking—in print and online. Published every month, with double issues in the summer and winter, it spans politics, science, foreign affairs, economics, climate and the environment, philosophy and the arts.

Since its outset, Prospect has been politically independent, with no party-political affiliation or agenda. It is a not-for profit organisation, supported by a trust as well as by advertisers and subscribers.

Prospect was founded in Britain in 1995 by Derek Coombs and the first editor David Goodhart. In the words of its first editorial, it set out to be “a home for those writers who see further into the future than the rest of us”—as it continues to be so today. In 1996, the magazine launched its website to continue the conversation online.

Over 27 years, Prospect has had four editors. After Goodhart came Bronwen Maddox and then Tom Clark. In September 2021 Alan Rusbridger, former editor of the Guardian, took charge of the magazine and relaunched it with a new design and a new suite of contributors and columnists.

Prospect is not just a magazine and website: you can listen to the Prospect Podcast for interviews with leading thinkers and writers, and Prospect Lives, where you can listen to columnists like Sheila Hancock and Alice Goodman read their pieces. Prospect also run an extensive events programme at our auditorium in Westminster. You can also join our Editor's Club for extra benefits including an invitation to our annual summer party.
