Robinson completed her trilogy of Gilead novels with the 2014 release of Lila. The novel, which was nominated for a National Book Award, cemented her reputation as one of the finest American novelists of her generation. Equally significant, though, is her work as an essayist and public intellectual. Her 2010 non-fiction collection, Absence of Mind, was a considered defence of the religious temperament against the claims of the “New Atheism,” as well as an attempt to lower the temperature of the American “culture wars” between science and religion.
