"Well that’s interesting," we thought as we picked another election leaflet off the floor as we rushed out of the house, a bit late for school. "Say what you will about our Lib Dem MP, he’s certainly forthright, and willing to face up to bigots on issues that other candidates won’t touch."

The key points were spelt out in red letters. He promotes liberalising the law on abortion. (Bravo! we thought.) He promotes embryonic research methods. (Bravissimo!) He promotes the legalisation of euthanasia. (Bravo ma piu mosso!) And he is one of the most outspoken secularists in parliament. (Archi-bravo!)

We felt a bit foolish when we got back in the evening and looked again. This was not a piece of unexpected plain speaking from the Lib Dems, but a smear from a bunch of unregenerate papists. (See it here.) Politics is, of course, a game of chance - and God moves in mysterious ways.
