As he showed in an in-depth interview with Prospect last year, Kissinger, 91, still feels he can influence international relations, and warns that the Ukraine conflict could escalate as did July 1914. Although still an intensely controversial figure for his actions in Vietnam, Cambodia and elsewhere, and for his espousal of realpolitik, his legacy of opening up diplomatic relations with China in 1972 still resonates. His 2014 book World Order lamented that there was little of this commodity around, and prescribed ways for the west to engage with those who rejected basic western notions.
