The elephant in the womb

A National Geographic channel documentary, In the Womb: Animals, may have drawn more on our affinity for baby creatures than our interest in developmental biology. But the images it produced, like this 12-month-old elephant—weighing roughly 12kg and not due to be born for another ten months—certainly lived up to its title. This picture was produced by a mixture of ultrasound scanning, tiny cameras and computer-graphic embellishment.
