Long-term Prospect readers may remember CAR Hills’s Clapham Omnibus column, dispatches from Charles’s life in south London, which ran in the magazine in 2000-01. More recent readers may know him only from the Prisoner column, which began in May 2007 while Charles was in Belmarsh, awaiting trial for conspiracy to murder, and continued throughout his sentence. (New Statesman editor Jason Cowley wrote about Charles in the Observer last year.)
Prospect can report that Charles was released from prison last week and seems in good spirits. Watch out for a last Prisoner (or rather ex-prisoner) column from him in the August issue of the magazine. In the meantime, for a quick CAR Hills fix,his columns, and a few other articles by him, can be read on our website.
