Kaushik Basu is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank. He is currently on leave from his post at Cornell University, where he is Professor of Economics and the C. Marks Professor of International Studies. His books include The Invisible Hand: Groundwork for a New Economics (Princeton), which argues that by ignoring the role of culture and custom, traditional economics promotes the view that the current system is the only viable one, thereby serving the interests of those who do well by this system.
