The best podcasts in May 2020—the return of Alan Partridge and the Secret Life of Prisons

Plus Bake Off's Mel Giedroyc takes to quilting
March 27, 2020

Mel Giedroyc is Quilting, Mel Giedroyc and Andy Bush

This is a slightly bizarre subject for a podcast—it’s pretty much just listening to two people slowly make a quilt—but it is wonderfully soothing. Mel Giedroyc (of Bake Off fame) and co-presenter Andy Bush are making a patchwork quilt using fabric and squares donated by listeners and guests, who tell stories they want to weave into the quilt. There’s chat, silliness, a bit of Giedroyc’s beloved innuendo, and the gentle sound of scissors snipping through fabric.

The Secret Life of Prisons, Prison Radio Association and the Prison Reform Trust

Made by former prisoners, this series is all about what life behind bars in the UK is really like—everything from what happens on arrival to release day. What’s it like to be sentenced? Do you pack a bag? And what do you put in it? The contributors include high-profile former prisoners such as Jonathan Aitken, who was a minister in John Major’s government, and people who work with current and former prisoners in various capacities.

Alan Partridge truly is bouncing back, with another TV series in the works and a new podcast. This imminent podcast wasn’t yet released at the time of writing, but it sounds like essential, back-of-the-net audio material, comprising of 20-minute episodes of purest Alan. As Steve Coogan has described it, “if anyone wants Alan up close and personal in their own space then the podcast is an opportunity.” What could be better?
