Musk, who was born in South Africa, describes himself as “an engineer and entrepreneur who builds and operates companies to solve environmental, social and economic challenges.” He was a co-founder of the online payments service PayPal and now heads two companies: Space X, which from 2015 will be running flights to and from the International Space Station under a $1.6bn contract from NASA, and Tesla Motors, which is developing affordable electric cars.
