Robert Gordon is a professor of social sciences at Northwestern University and one of the world’s leading experts on  business cycles and long-run economic growth. Gordon is the author of a forthcoming book on the history of the American standard of living. Entitled Beyond the Rainbow: The American Standard of Living Since the Civil War, it builds on the argument he laid out in a 2012 essay which raised questions about the inevitability of economic growth. “The US economy grew robustly thanks to big inventions; those days are gone,” he writes.
