Anne Applebaum is an American journalist specialising in the politics of Eastern Europe. Originally a correspondent for the Economist and other newspapers, she has also served as an adjunct fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Her 2004 book Gulag won the Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction. Her most recent book Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944-56 has been widely hailed as a masterpiece, including by AN Wilson who described it in a review as “the best work of modern history I have ever read.”
