Ai Weiwei

Chinese artist and pro-democracy activist

Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist, best known for his work on the iconic “Bird’s Nest” stadium built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and his 2010 Tate Modern installation Sunflower Seeds. Ai Weiwei’s pro-democracy activism has led to regular clashes with the Chinese government, and in April 2011 he was arrested and detained for 81 days. Earlier this year a collection of quotations, Weiwei-isms was published by Princeton University Press.
