The grown-up business of saving lives can have a remarkably infantilising effect. We, the governed, latch on to the milestones on the government’s “roadmap”—shopping trips, visitors, somewhere in the distance a night out—as a child counts down the days to a promised half-term sleepover (if they brush their teeth). We struggle with the science, but with the vaccine it sounds like it should all work out. Although it’s hard to feel sure after Daddy in Downing Street promised a normal Christmas that didn’t come off.
