Fishing was my livelihood and my life.

I’d go out early, on the ebb tide. Put up the ragged sail. Hear my boat, the Mary Jane, complaining in the wind. Use my telescope to search the sky for gulls. Watch what the other boats were doing. Then, when I had a sniff of how the herring were moving, heave out my nets, heavy and damp, and lower the sail and take up the oars and set the boat’s course and wait and listen with my hand on the tiller and watch the corks idling on the water and feel the…
