Prospect Book Club – Tom Holland
In Britain, secularism is on the rise. Fewer and fewer people go to Church. But does that mean the Christian inheritance is now an irrelevant relic we can easily cast off?
Historian Tom Holland thinks not. In his new book, Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind, he says that Christianity is the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world and its emergence the single most transformative development in western history. Even those who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Without Christianity, says Holland, there would no human rights—or indeed “wokeness. ”
This passionately argued and personal work is sure to stir debate. Perfect in the run-up to Christmas.
