World Thinkers 2015: Mao Yushi

The elder statesman of Chinese free-market economics, Mao Yushi continued to challenge the authority of Xi Jinping and the ruling Communist Party in 2014, declaring that the system was run by “very capable people, who also happened to be corrupt.” Having had his work banned in 2003 in response to his petitioning the government to exonerate the Tiananmen Square protestors, Mao found himself blacklisted again as the CCP cracked down on human rights writing that might fan the flames of the Hong Kong demonstrations (see no. 49, Joshua Wong).
