Unenclosed toilets are controversial

As far as the South African press is concerned, the real world has been relegated to the back pages. The main section of the Cape Argus had twelve pages on the tournament, even before getting to the still-simmering issue of enclosed toilets in the Cape Flats. The provincial government run by the Democratic Alliance (DA) had planned to install a whole series of toilet blocks in the township of Khayelitsha, but in an effort to build more blocks with the tiny funds available to them they decided to build them with sheet iron walls and roofs. The local ANC youth league, looking to pick a fight with the DA, not only described the facilities as insulting but have led a number of demolitions. Not surprisingly, local residents were not impressed.
