Best gift received: my godchildren Eleanor and Cara Shearer and the chance to be with them regularly as they grow up. I started writing children’s books because some godmothers knit and some tell stories. Worst gift received: a knitting machine.

I hope I have never given or received a terrible gift—Christmas is a time to show you care with thoughtful presents. It’s the thought that counts! I try to give appropriate gifts, but where I receive things I don’t like I still know that someone cares enough to give in the first place. Let’s be honest, Christmas is the time for realising the privilege of giving and receiving and the time to renew a pledge of service to our fellow man.
