Sarko: a 21st-century Napoleon

Why is Nicolas Sarkozy so mysteriously appealing? asks Lucy Wadham, author of the forthcoming The Secret Life of France (Faber), in her article for this month’s Prospect. It’s because the French secretly want to be dominated by a strong, libidinous male, she says—and this desire has taken the political left by surprise, leaving it in disarray. Sideshows like Sarkozy’s lightning conquest of Carla Bruni (known as “the predator” for her voracious sexual appetite) have only boosted his magnetism, something Wadham can testify to first-hand after seeing him in the flesh. “Sitting in Sarkozy’s line of vision for two hours was among the most erotically charged experiences I have had,” she confesses.

Wadham says she is not alone in this sentiment: despite its many powerful women, France really wants to be controlled by a man. Is this really so? Weigh in here.

  1. Lee Hamilton says:

Is this the libidinous origin of the Salic Law and agnatic succession? Does this mean women have been quietly choosing the leaders all along, or does this have deeper implications for the sublimated tastes of French males generally? …

  2. David Fairweather says:

Lucy Wadham’s claim that Nicolas Sarkozy spent a news conference undressing her with his eyes may or may not be true, but surely what is true is that this article does not meet the journalist standards Prospect purports to follow. This article would be more at home in a gossip column.

  3. Angela Mayer says:

This article is funny and should be in an Elle or Vanity magazine for women. It is the first Prospect article I read because it was passed on to me by a frienc living in England. The journalist does not know much about French culture. Most French women just take it as a matter of fact that 90% heterosexual French men are undressing them with their eyes whenever and wherever they get a chance – President or not. “Dwarf” is also a very relative term. Sarko may be a dwarf for Anglo-saxons or North Europeans but not really the case in France, Italy, or Asia.

  4. Tevong says:

This is a woman’s way of projecting her infatuation into some semblance of political analysis, similar articles can be found for Obama. That headline should read “I have fantasies about men in power like most women” and avoided the embarassing “France wants sex dwarf dominance” argument it tries to hide under.

  5. Rosalba says:

Maybe this analysis also explains why he is vicious, evil and manifests hate with a passion-like cursing at protesters, allowing undue force by the police and his inexplicable dislike of anything Turkish. In short a caricature of a statesman…

  6. Ruth Thomas says:

    Poor Lucy Wadham…

She needs to get out more see a lot more men and stop staring at Sarko’s navel which is where most of us would reach – yuk what a thought !
